Interesting Contemporary Forgery

Starting Price: 500 CHF
Hammer Price:  500 CHF
Lot 34

SICILY. Panormos (as Ziz). Circa 405-380 BC. Tetradrachm (Subaeratus, 25 mm, 16.66 g, 12 h), Contemporary forgery. Charioteer, holding kentron in left hand and reins in both, driving a galloping quadriga to right; above, Nike flying left, crowning charioteer with wreath. Rev. Female head to right, wearing sphendone; around, three or possibly four dolphins. Cf. HGC 2, 1005. Jenkins, Punic -. SNG ANS -. Core exposed on the lower edge of the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

This type, not published in Jenkins, must be an ancient forgery, probably inspired by the Siculo-Punic tetradrachms of Panormos. The style is quite crude, the legend appears to be non-sensical (at least that part of it which can be seen), and of course the plating of the surface silver along the lower obverse edge is broken exposing a copper core.
