ACHAIA, Achaian League. Circa mid-3rd century BC (or later?). Hemidrachm (Silver, 14mm, 2.62 g 11). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. AX monogram within laurel wreath with ties below. BCD 381 (this coin). BMC 1 var. Clerk 1 var. A very pleasant example of an extremely rare type. Very fine.

This is a very strange coin. The portrait of Zeus is of an elegant, but quite different style than LHS lots 374-376: the Achaean monogram is rather massive, and the wreath has its ties below, not above. As far as we know this coin has no published parallel. This would seem to be a separate issue, later in date than the others. A note from BCD: an intriguing coin! Its weight suggests it belongs to the early group. I would not date it much later than the 250 [...].
