CENTRAL EUROPE, Vindelici. Early 1st century BC. Stater (Gold, 17mm, 7.23 g). Head of an eagle to left, between two pellets; all within wreath. Rev. Five pellets within a torque with pellet at each end; all within cup-shaped incuse. Kellner type II C. Obverse struck from a very worn die; the reverse from a rusty one, otherwise, very fine.

CENTRAL EUROPE, Boii. First half of the 1st century BC. Stater (Gold, 17mm, 7.15 g), minted in the area of western and southwestern Slovakia and in northern Burgenland. Irregular convex bulge. Rev. Concave sea-shell shaped pattern. Flesche 478-479. Lanz 53. Paulsen 395. Very fine.

CENTRAL EUROPE, Boii. 1st century BC. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 0.83 g 12), Type H Roseldorf/Nemcice. Horse advancing to left. Rev. Horse advancing to right; above, circular symbol. Flesche 496. Kolnikova, Nemcice 890. Paulsen 595. Scheers 1209. Very rare. A fascinating example with a beautiful old tone. Slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

CENTRAL EUROPE, Boii. Late 1st century BC. Obol (Silver, 10mm, 0.46 g 8). Pentagram with a central pellet. Rev. Stylized forepart of pegasos to left. Dembski 779. Flesche -. Rare. Attractively toned and particularly well struck for this type. Good very fine.

DANUBE REGION. 3rd-2nd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21mm, 13.70 g 7), a stylized version derived from tetradrachms struck by Audoleon. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Horseman to right; around, pseudo-legend; below, "Y" above columnar device (Audoleon monogram). Dembski 1339. OTA 422.1. Scratch on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

DANUBE REGION. Imitating Philip III of Macedon, c. 2nd Century BC. Drachm (Silver, 19mm, 3.47 g 12). Stylized head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin. Rev. Zeus seated left, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, stylized monogram. CCCBM 1 203. Gobl, OTA, 591/2. Very fine.

EASTERN EUROPE, Eravisci. Denarius (Silver, 17mm, 3.35 g 2), imitating an anonymous Roman Republican type, 1st century BC. DVTEVTI Helmeted head of Roma to right. Rev. DANUBE REGION. Eravisci, 1st century BC. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 3.60 g 11). Stylized head of Jupiter to right Rev. RAVIZ Globe between rudder and thunderbolt. Dembski 1564 ff. var. (rudder and thunderbolt inverted). Struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine.

EASTERN EUROPE, Eravisci. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 3.28 g 2), imitating C. Postumius (obverse) and L. Papius (reverse), after 75 BC. Draped bust of Diana to right, bow and quiver over her shoulder. DANUBE REGION. 1st century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 35mm, 14.97 g 12). Wreathed head of Dionysos to right, but of degraded style. Rev. Herakles standing facing; legend degraded to dots and circles. Dembski 1527 var. Lanz cf. 983 ff. Nicely toned. Extremely fine.

GAUL, Massalia. Circa 390/86-218/5 BC. Obol (Silver, 10mm, 0.71 g 1). Bare head of Apollo to right. Rev. M-A in two quarters of four-spoked wheel. Depeyrot 10. An outstanding obverse in particularly fine style. Slightly toned. Reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, extremely fine.

CAMPANIA, Neapolis. Circa 320-300 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19mm, 7.49 g 4). Head of nymph to right; behind neck, bunch of grapes. Rev. NEOΠOΛITΩN Man-headed bull walking right; above, Nike flying right, placing wreath on bull's head; below, monogram ΠΔ. HN Italy 571. Sambon 439. SNG ANS 318. Beautiful style. Minor scuff on reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

CAMPANIA, Neapolis. Circa 275-250 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19mm, 7.35 g 9). Head of nymph to left; behind neck,lyre. Rev. NEOΠOΛITΩN Man-headed bull walking right; above, Nike flying right, placing wreath on bull's head; below, IΣ. HN Italy 586. Sambon 506. SNGANS 395. Nicely toned and with good surfaces. Good very fine.

CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 390-385 BC. Nomos (Silver, 19mm, 7.67 g 2). Nude youth riding on horse galloping to right; below horse’s belly, Λ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Taras riding dolphin to left, holding an akrostolion in his right hand and resting his left on the dolphin. Fischer-Bossert 396d (this coin). Attractive, of good style and nicely toned. Reverse slightly off-center, otherwise, about extremely fine.

LUCANIA, Metapontion. Circa 530-520 BC. Stater (30mm, 7.74 g 12). ME - TA Ear of barley with seven grains; border of pellets within two concentric linear circles. Rev. Ear of barley, incuse; rayed border. HN III, 1470. Noe 91. SNG ANS 197. Well struck and beautifully engraved. About extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontion. Circa 340-330 . Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 7.94 g, 11 h), Ami.... Head of Leukippos right, wearing Corinthian helmet; to left, lion head right; below chin, monogram. Rev. META Barley ear of seven grains, leaf to left; club above leaf; below, AMI. HN Italy 1575. Johnston class B, 2. SNG ANS 434. Beautifully toned. Minor surface marks, otherwise. Nearly extremely fine.

BRUTTIUM, Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Circa 325-317 BC. Stater (Silver, 23mm, 8.52 g 11). Pegasus flying left. Rev. Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet; to right, ΛOK; to left, head of an eagle. Pegasi 9. SNG München 1485. Some minor marks, otherwise. nearly extremely fine.

SICILY, unlocated Punic mint. Circa 350-300 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24mm, 17.08 g 3). Wreathed head of Tanit-Persephone, with dolphins swimming around. Rev. Horse's head left with large palm behind; below, punic letter M. Jenkins, CPS III, 256 (same dies). Good very fine.

SICILY, Gela. Circa 480/75-475/70 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19mm, 8.66 g 9). Rider galloping to right, bearded and nude but for high helmet, hurling spear with his raised right hand. Rev. CΕΛΑ Forepart of man-headed bull to right. Kraay & Hirmer 156. Jenkins, Gela 28. SNG ANS 5. SNG Ashmolean 1720. Attractively toned and with a very powerful reverse. Some striking flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.

Sicily, Gela. Circa 465-450 BC. Litra (Silver, 12mm, 0.86 g 3). Horse walking right; above, wreath. Rev. ΓΕΛΑΣ Forepart of Acheloos as a man-headed bull to right. Jenkins, Gela 330. Well centered but with a lightly struck obverse. Somewhat rough surfaces. Very fine.

SICILY, Katane. Circa 415/3-404 BC. Litra (Silver, 12mm, 0.78 g 11). Head of Silenos to left, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΚΑΤΑΝΑΙΩΝ Winged thunderbolt between two shields. Boehringer, Kataneische LI 6-7. Mirone 82. SNG ANS 1266. A nicely toned and well centered example of extraordinarily fine style. Light scratches on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

SICILY, Syracuse. Agathokles, 317-289 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 8.47 g 10), c. 317-305 BC. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet decorated with griffin. Rev. ZEUGITANA, Carthage. Circa 300 BC. Shekel (Silver, 19mm, 7.96 g 2). Head of Tanit to left, wearing wreath of grain ears, pendant earring and necklace. Rev. Horse standing right, his head turned back to left; behind, palm tree; to right, star. Gulbenkian 383. Muller 108. SNG Copenhagen 141. An attractive, toned example. Minor marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 400 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 14mm, 2.39 g 12), Olynthos. Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΧΑΛΚΙΔΕΩΝ Kithara with seven strings; all within very shallow incuse square. SNG ANS 522 (same obverse die). Attractively toned. Good very fine.

MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 490-480 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.36 g). Head of bull right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG Ashmolean 2221. SNG Lockett 1291. Rare. Very fine.

KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 14.11 g, 9 h), struck under Philip III, Amphipolis, 323/2-c. 315. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Young jockey, holding palm branch and reins, on horseback to right; below horse, monogram of ΤΕ and Λ. Le Rider pl. 46, 3. SNG ANS 667-673. Well struck. Extremely fine.

KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.34 g, 1 h), Pella, c. 323-315. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦIΛIΠΠOΥ Young jockey, on horseback to right, holding palm branch and reins; below horse, snake; to right, Boeotian shield. Le Rider 524 (S279/R432). A coin of attractive early Hellenistic style. Test cut on reverse, otherwise. Good very fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 16.89 g 6), Mesembria, c. 250-175 BC. Head of Herakles wearing lion’s skin to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; below throne, Corinthian helmet left. Price 971. Attractive and clear, and of vigorous style. About extremely fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios, 323-317 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17mm, 4.41 g 11), Kolophon, c. 323-319. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to left; lyre in left field. Price P43. A beautiful example with clear surfaces and some original mint luster. Extremely fine.

THRACE, Apollonia Pontika. Mid-late 4th century BC. Drachm (Silver, 13mm, 3.27 g 11). Facing gorgoneion. Rev. Anchor with Α to left and crayfish to right. SNG BM Black Sea 160. SNG Copenhagen 458. An attractive example with a particularly nice obverse. Slightly off center, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

THRACE, Apollonia Pontika. Late 5th-4th centuries BC. Diobol (?) (Silver, 9mm, 0.98 g 11). Facing gorgoneion. Rev. Anchor with Α to left and crayfish to right. SNG BM Black Sea 167. SNG Copenhagen 461. A lovely, toned and well centered example. Extremely fine.

THRACE, Mesambria. 4th century BC. Diobol (Silver, 9mm, 1.33 g). Facing Corinthian helmet. Rev. META within four-spoked wheel. Karayotov I 39–140. SNG BM Black Sea 268–71. SNG Copenhagen 652-653. Topalov, Messambria 9. A perfect, nicely toned and genuine example. Extremely fine.

Quadripartite incuse square with alternating raised and sunken quarters; pellet and monogram AΓ in one quarter and phiale in the opposite. SNG Fitzwilliam 464. Weber 2425. About extremely fine.

THRACE, Chersonesos. Circa 386-338 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 13mm, 2.50 g). Forepart of lion right, his head turned to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square with alternating raised and sunken quarters; pellet in one quarter, bunch of grapes in the opposite. McClean 4079. Nicely toned. With a curiously schematic obverse style. Extremely fine.

THRACE, Chersonesos. Circa 386-338 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 13mm, 2.31 g). Forepart of lion to right, his head turned to left. Rev. Athena Nikephoros seated left, her left arm resting on shield, spear behind; monograms to outer left and in exergue. Müller 406. Thompson 86. A lovely, toned example. Minor marks, otherwise, good very fine.

THESSALY, Larissa. Early to mid 4th Century BC. Drachm (Silver, 18mm, 6.10 g 9). Head of the nymph Larissa to left, wearing earring. Rev. ΛAPIΣAIA bridled horse, its rein trailing, galloping right. BCD Triton 180 var. (same obverse die, but with a slightly different legend arrangement). An attractive, toned, example. Minor double striking on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

AKARNANIA, Argos Amphilochikon. Circa 360-330 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 8.44 g 6). Pegasus flying right; below, AP above dog reclining to right. Rev. APΓEΩN (retrograde) Head of Athena to left, wearing Corinthian helmet; to right, barley grain. BCD 130 (same dies). Calciati II -. Good very fine.

PHOKIS, Federal Coinage. Circa 449-447. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 0.98 g 9). O - Φ Bull’s head facing. Rev. Forepart of boar to right; all within incuse square. BCD Lokris 245-246. Williams Period III, 226. Well centered and struck. Slightly porous, otherwise, good very fine.

BOEOTIA, Thebes. Circa 395-338 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 12.21 g), c. 390-382 BC. Boeotian shield. Rev. ΔΑ - ΜΩ Amphora with high handles; hanging from the left handle, ivy sprig with two leaves and berry; above, club with handle to right. BCD Boiotia 489-491. BMC 129. Winterthur 1916. Attractive and struck on a broad flan. Minor scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.

BOEOTIA, Thebes. Circa 425-395 BC. Stater (Silver, 24mm, 12.22 g). Boeotian shield. Rev. Θ Ε Bearded head of Dionysos to right, wearing an ivy wreath. BCD Boiotia 438/9 var. A bright and attractively toned example with a nice head of Dionysos. Obverse struck off center and with a minor metal flaw, otherwise, good very fine.

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 490-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 17.26 g, 2 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing to right, head facing; behind, olive sprig. Seltman, Group M. SNG Copenhagen 20. Rare. Nicely toned and with a bold Archaic head of Athena. Good very fine.

ATTICA, Athens. Circa 108-107 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28mm, 16.59 g 12), new style coinage, Damon, Sosikrates and Timon. Helmeted head of Athena to right Α-ΘΕ / ΔΑ−ΜΩΝ / ΣΩΣΙ/ΚΡΑ/ΤΗΣ TI/MON Owl standing right on amphora; to right, quiver and bow; M on amphora. Thompson 729d. Very fine.

ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 480-457 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 12.24 g). Sea turtle with line of pellets down the back of its shell. Rev. Square incuse with large skew pattern. Gulbenkian 523. CORINTHIA, Corinth. Circa 400-375 BC. Stater (Silver, 23mm, 8.51 g 3). Pegasos flying to right; below, koppa. Rev. Helmeted head of Athena to right; behind, serpent to right. BCD Korinth 63. Pegasi 222. A lovely and nicely toned example struck on a broad flan. Struck with a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

CORINTHIA, Corinth. Circa 350-330 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 8.49 g 1). Pegasos flying left; below, koppa. Rev. [Δ] - Ι Head of Athena to left, wearing Corinthian helmet; behind, Artemis running left, holding two torches. BMC 314. Calciati 457. Minor die rust, otherwise, good very fine.

SIKYONIA. Sikyon. Circa 360s-340s/330s BC. Obol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.68 g, 9 h). Dove alighting right, holding fillet in its beak; on wing, Ι. Rev. ΣΙ Dove flying to right. BCD 245. A sharply struck and attractive coin. Struck slightly off center and with an edge slightly bent in striking, otherwise. Extremely fine.

ACHAIA, Achaian League. Circa mid-3rd century BC (or later?). Hemidrachm (Silver, 14mm, 2.62 g 11). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. AX monogram within laurel wreath with ties below. BCD 381 (this coin). BMC 1 var. Clerk 1 var. A very pleasant example of an extremely rare type. Very fine.
