THESSALY, Thessalian League. Circa 48/7-45/4 BC. Stater (Silver, 23mm, 4.43 g 12), Petraios and Ptolemaios. Head of Zeus to right, wearing oak wreath. Rev. ΘΕΣΣΑ / ΛΩΝ Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear with her right hand and extending shield in her left; above spear, ΠΕΤΡΑΙΟΥ; in exergue, ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ. SNG Copenhagen 290. Toned and struck on a broad flan, a most unusual coin with a very low weight; as such, very rare. About extremely fine.

Ex Nomos 9, 21 October 2014, 99 and from a Swiss collection.

This is a most peculiar coin! It is of perfectly good style and appears to be of good silver, but it is unusually thin and is of remarkably low weight. It seems likely that this is an example of a mistake in mint control: a seriously underweight flan managed to pass inspection and was struck in a normal way. This is a most interesting, and attractive, curiosity!
