THESSALY, Trikka. Circa 440-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.92 g 11). Horse galloping to left. Rev. Τ-Ι-Ρ (Sic!) The nymph Trikke bending to the right, her left leg raised, holding a hydria, which she fills with water pouring from a lion’s head spout at the upper right; behind her to left, a low bench; all within an incuse square. BCD (Triton) 778.4, 779.3 var. Very rare, possibly unpublished. Slightly rough surfaces, but very sharp and well-struck. Nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This coin is quite unusual - the engraver has shown the nymph Trikke in an elaborate fashion, with some sort of bench behind her, and has inverted the second two letters of the city. In any event, the representation is very life like: women would have filled water jars from fountains just like this every day all over the ancient Greek world.
