CELTIC BRITAIN, Durotriges. Uninscribed. Circa 65 BC-AD 45. Stater (Silver, 17mm, 5.83 g 1), Durotrigan E, Abstract Cranborne Chase type. Deconstructed remains of a head of Apollo to right. Rev. Deconstructed remains of a disjointed horse surrounded by pellets. SCBC 366. Van Arsdell 1235-1. Lightly toned. Extremely fine.

CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 276-272 BC. Stater (Gold, 8.53 g 3). Laureate head of Zeus to right; behind, monogram of ΝΚ. Rev. [ΤΑΡΑΝΤΙΝΩΝ] Eagle, with raised wings, standing left on thunderbolt; to right, monogram of ΑΡ. Fischer-Bossert G35 d (this coin). HN III, 983. Very rare. Reverse very slightly double-struck. Good very fine.

LUCANIA, Metapontum. Circa 325-275 BC. Diobol (Silver, 1.09 g 6). Laureate head of Zeus Ammon to right, with ram’s horn around his ear. Rev. ΜΕ Ear of barley with six grains and leaf to right: to right, on leaf, tripod. HN III 1603. Johnston F6.2 (same dies). SNG ANS 520. SNG Lloyd 397. Nicely toned and of splendid style. About extremely fine.

LUCANIA, Serdaioi. c. 500-475 BC. Diobol (Silver, 1.24 g 6). ΣΕΡ Head of Dionysos to right, with long pointed beard, torc-like necklace and, possibly, a wreath over his brow. Rev. Bunch of grapes. De Luynes 1139 (same dies). HN III 1718 (”triobol”). Extremely rare, one of three known examples). Lightly toned. Rough surfaces, otherwise, extremely fine.

SICILY, Akragas. Circa 465/4-446 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 17.15 g 12). ΑΚΡΑC - ΑΝΤΟΣ (partially retrograde) Eagle standing left with closed wings. Rev. Crab within a shallow circular incuse. SNG ANS 979. SNG Copenhagen 41. SNG Oxford 1669. A splendid example, perfectly struck and very well centered. Good extremely fine.

SICILY, Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 18mm, 8.62 g 1). Bearded horseman, nude, riding right, brandishing spear in his upraised right hand. Rev. CΕΛΑ Forepart of man-headed bull to right. Jenkins 8. Kraay & Hirmer 155 (same dies). Attractively toned and very well struck, with a few very minor marks. Extremely fine.

CARTHAGE. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Gold, 18mm, 9.29 g 9). Head of Tanit to left, wearing triple-pendant earring, necklace tied at the back and hung with pendants, and a wreath of grain leaves. Rev. Horse standing to right with three pellets on the ground line. Jenkins & Lewis Group IIIi, 111-4. A splendid piece. Good extremely fine.

ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 435-411 BC. Drachm (Silver, 3.54 g). Nude Satyr kneeling facing, his head turned to right, preparing to lift a nymph whom he holds in his arms and who is protesting with her right hand. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider, Thasiennes 8. SNG Copenhagen 1018 . An attractive lightly toned coin. Extremely fine.

ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 411-340 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 0.87 g 11). Satyr kneeling to right, his head turned 3/4 facing, holding a kantharos in his right hand. Rev. ΘΑΣΙΩΝ Volute krater with tall handles. Dewing 1329. SNG Copenhagen 1031. Nicely toned. Extremely fine.

MACEDON, Neapolis. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 8.94 g). Facing head of a Gorgon with protruding tongue. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG Ashmolean 2320. SNG ANS 400. SNG Copenhagen 223. A very sharply struck and well centered piece. Slightly granular surface. Extremely fine.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. Quarter Stater (Gold, 2.16 g 3), ‘Amphipolis’, uncertain mint in Macedonia, c. 330-320. Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Thunderbolt, bow and club. Price 165. Very rare and in unusually fine condition. Good extremely fine.

THESSALY, Thessalian League. Circa 470s-460s BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 3.06 g 7). Forepart of prancing horse to right, emerging from rock. Rev. ΦΕ - ΘΑ Wheat grain with hull upwards; all within incuse square. Triton XV (BCD), 8 (same dies). An attractive, clear piece. Nearly extremely fine.

THESSALY, Thessalian League. Circa 470s-460s BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 2.95 g 5). Forepart of prancing horse to right, emerging from rocks. Rev. ΦΕ / ΤΑ Wheat grain with hull upwards; all within incuse square. BCD II 13 (same obverse die). Attractive and clear. Good very fine.

THESSALY, Thessalian League. Circa 470-460. Hemiobol (Silver, 0.53 g 8). Head of bridled horse to right. Rev. ΦΕΘΑ Club upwards, diagonally place in an incuse square. Nomos 4 (BCD), 1007 var. (obol). Triton XV (BCD) 20-21 var. Rare. Nicely struck and centered. Minor scrape on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

THESSALY, Larissa. Mid to late 4th century BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 8.96 g 9). Head of the nymph Larissa, three-quarter facing to left, wearing ampyx and pearl-drop earring. Rev. ΛΑΡΙ Σ - ΑΙΩΝ Bridled horse trotting to right; below, trident head to left. Triton XV (BCD), 329. An attractive piece with a golden-brown patina. Nearly extremely fine.

THESSALY, Pharkadon. Circa 440-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.94 g 3). Horse walking to right. Rev. ΦΑΡ - ΚΑΔΟ Athena standing right, wearing armor and aegis, with her spear over her left shoulder and her shield resting on the ground before her. Triton XV (BCD) 619.2. Lightly toned and attractive. About extremely fine.

THESSALY, Skotussa. Circa 465-460 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 3.08 g 11). Forepart of horse to right, with, below, a barely visible (retrograde) Ν. Rev. ΣΚ - Ο Germinating barley grain; all within incuse square. BCD (Triton) 731 (same dies). SNG Cop 251. Lightly toned with slightly rough surfaces, but attractive and clear. Good very fine.

AKARNANIA, Leukas. Circa 400-375 BC. Stater (Silver, 8.63 g 10). Λ Pegasos flying right, with curved wing. Rev. Σ Head of Athena wearing Corinthian helmet to right; to left, bunch of grapes. BCD 186. BMC 14. Calciati II 38. Slightly porous surfaces and some deposits, otherwise, nicely struck and well centered. Good very fine.

BOEOTIA. Thebes. Circa 425-395 BC. Stater (Silver, 11.93 g). Boeotian shield. Rev. Θ - Ε Head of Dionysos to right, bearded and wearing an ivy wreath; all within incuse square. BCD Boiotia 438(this coin). BMC 58. Winterthur 1906. Attractively toned and with a serene and noble head of Dionysos. Good very fine.

BOEOTIA, Thebes. Circa 405-395 BC. Stater (Silver, 11.91 g). Boeotian shield. Rev. Θ - Ε Bearded head of Dionysos, three-quarters facing, turned slightly to right, wearing ivy wreath. BCD Boiotia 457 (this coin). BMC 104. Jameson 1164. Very rare. Attractively toned and with an elegant and serene head of Dionysos of the finest Classical style. Good very fine.

BOEOTIA, Thebes. Circa 395-338 BC. Stater (Silver, 12.27 g), c. 390-382 BC. Boeotian shield. Rev. ΔΑ - ΜΩ Amphora with high handles; hanging from the left handle, ivy sprig with two leaves and berry; above, club with handle to right. BCD Boiotia 489 (same reverse die). BMC 129. Winterthur 1916. A lovely, sharp and well-toned example. Extremely fine.

BOEOTIA, Thebes. Circa 395 BC. Drachm (Gold, 6.11 g 1). Bearded head of Dionysos to left, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΘΕ The infant Herakles, nude, seated facing and holding a coiling serpent by the neck in each hand; above, club to left. Unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. Unique, an exceptional coin of great importance. Minor scrapes on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 456/45-431 BC. Stater (Silver, 12.40 g). Tortoise seen from above. Rev. Incuse square divided into five compartments. ACGC 127. Dewing 1683-1685. Milbank pl. 2, 12-13. An exceptionally well-preserved piece struck in very high relief. Minor bang at the top of the shell, otherwise, good extremely fine.

SIKYONIA, Sikyon. Circa 450-425 BC. Drachm (Silver, 6.31 g 6). san Chimaera prowling to left. Rev. inverted san Dove flying to right; below right, Δ (= drachme); all within incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos 162. SNG Copenhagen 20 = Traité 738 and pl. CCXIX, 14. Of very great rarity, perhaps the finest known example. Nearly extremely fine.
