Nude youth kneeling to right, wearing a tight fitting cap and holding an arrow (?) in his right hand and an unstrung bow in his left. Rev. Extremely rare, one of a very few known examples. Nicely toned with some minor flatness as struck, otherwise, extremely fine.
THRACE, Ainos. circa 360/350 BCE. Tetradrachm (Silver, 15.29 g 11). Head of Hermes facing, turned slightly to left, wearing a petasos. Rev. ΑΙΝΙΟΝ Male goat, with somewhat curved horns, standing to right; to right, vertical thunderbolt. May, Ainos, -. Apparently unique and unpublished save for its auction appearances. A remarkable and impressive piece with a highly emotional and intense head of Apollo. Extremely fine.

ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΥ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΜΑΡΩΝΙΤΩΝ Dionysos, nude but for chlamys draped over his left arm, standing left, holding two narthex wands in his left hand and bunch of grapes with his right; to left, monogram of ΝΑΥ; to right, monogram of ΑΥΚ. Dewing 1296. Schönert-Geiss 1145-1176. A beautifully toned example, well struck on a broad flan. Traces of overstriking on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 480-463 BC. Stater (Silver, 8.71 g). Nude ithyphallic Satyr, with long beard and long hair, moving right in the archaic ‘running-kneeling’ position, holding a nymph in his arms, who raises her right hand in protest and wears two bracelets, a torc-like necklace and thin robes. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square of windmill form. Le Rider, Thasiennes 5. SNG Copenhagen 1010-1012. An attractive, toned example of transitional style. About extremely fine.

THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Berge (”Lete”). Circa 500 BC. Stater (Silver, 9.60 g). Nude Satyr standing right, grasping the right hand of a nymph who is fleeing right but has turned her head left to gaze at him; to left, right and between the figures, two pellets. Rev. Rough incuse square diagonally divided. HPM pl. VII, 17 (this coin). SNG ANS 948 var. A fascinating piece, one of the earliest staters of “Lete” with a splendid pedigree. Toned, but with a few old scratches and bangs and some crystalization, otherwise, good very fine.

MACEDON, Aineia. Mid 4th century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 14.11 g 4). Head of the nymph Aineia to right, wearing wreath of leaves and a prominent triangular pendant earring. Rev. ΑΙΝΕΗΤΩΝ Bull standing to right, its head turned back to left. Struck from the same dies as CNG 67 (2004) 401 and Giessener Münzhandlung 102 (2000), 133, otherwise unpublished. Extremely rare. The finest of five known examples, nicely centered and very well struck. Very slight traces of double striking, otherwise, extremely fine.
MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 383-379. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24mm, 14.68 g 2), Olynthos. Laureate head of Apollo to left, his hair falling down the back of his neck. Rev. With a large head of Athena, struck on an unusually broad flan. Obverse slightly weakly struck and with some minor die rust, otherwise, good extremely fine.

Virtually as struck.

Newell 116 (obverse die CXI). Nicely toned and with an elegant portrait. Extremely fine.

Well struck and well centered with a fine portrait. Extremely fine.

THESSALY, Ainianes. Hypata. Circa 80s-40s BC. Trihemidrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 7.59 g, 12 h), under the magistrate Leukidas, 1st century BC. Head of Athena to right wearing Attic helmet decorated with tendril, pegasus and four horse protomes. Rev. ΑΙΝΙΑΝΩΝ ΛΕΥΚΙΔΑ Phemios as a slinger, nude but for chlamys over his shoulder and sword in scabbard, shooting sling to right; behind, leaning against his right leg, two spears; to right, wheat ear on stalk. Callataÿ, Argent, p.129, 19 (this coin). Lovely dark toning. Good very fine.
THESSALY, Larissa. Mid to late 4th century BC. Drachm (Silver, 6.10 g 6). Head of the nymph Larissa three-quarters facing, turned slightly to left, wearing ampyx, pendant earring and simple ring necklace. Rev. ΛΑΡΙΣ - ΑΙΩΝ Horse crouching right, preparing to roll over. BCD, Triton XV, 318 ff. Nicely toned. A well-struck, well-centered and attractive example. Extremely fine.
THESSALY, Larissa. Mid to late 4th century BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 8.96 g 9). Head of the nymph Larissa, three-quarter facing to left, wearing ampyx and pearl-drop earring. Rev. ΛΑΡΙ Σ - ΑΙΩΝ Bridled horse trotting to right; below, trident head to left. Triton XV (BCD), 329. An attractive piece with a golden-brown patina. Nearly extremely fine.
THESSALY, Magnetes. Circa 168-140 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20mm, 4.31 g 10). Laureate head of Zeus to right, behind, monogram; border of dots. Rev. ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ Artemis, with bow in her right and quiver over her shoulder, seated left on prow; to left, dolphin; to right, monogram. This exact variety apparently unpublished. Lightly toned. Some light scratches in the obverse field to right, otherwise, good very fine.
THESSALY, Methylion. Circa 465-460 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.91 g 5). Horse’s head to left. Rev. ΜΕ - ΘV Barley grain in opening pod, shown upwards, diagonally placed in a shallow incuse square. Nomos 4 (BCD) 1201 and Triton XV (BCD) 463.2 (same dies); otherwise, unpublished. Extremely rare, one of three or four known examples. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, about extremely fine.
THESSALY, Pagasai. Mid 4th century BC. Obol (Silver, 0.94 g 6). Laureate head of Apollo to left, but with his face turned partially forward. Rev. Π - Α - Γ - Α Lyre with six strings; all within a slight incuse circle. Unpublished save for its appearance as Triton XV (BCD), 502. Of great rarity, the second known example. A coin of great historical interest. Slightly crystalized surfaces, otherwise, about very fine.
THESSALY, Pharkadon. Circa 440-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.94 g 3). Horse walking to right. Rev. ΦΑΡ - ΚΑΔΟ Athena standing right, wearing armor and aegis, with her spear over her left shoulder and her shield resting on the ground before her. Triton XV (BCD) 619.2. Lightly toned and attractive. About extremely fine.
THESSALY, Skotussa. Circa 465-460 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 3.08 g 11). Forepart of horse to right, with, below, a barely visible (retrograde) Ν. Rev. ΣΚ - Ο Germinating barley grain; all within incuse square. BCD (Triton) 731 (same dies). SNG Cop 251. Lightly toned with slightly rough surfaces, but attractive and clear. Good very fine.
THESSALY, Skotussa. Circa 394-367 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 15mm, 3.71 g 12). Head of youthful, beardless Herakles to left, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. Σ - ΚΟ /ΦΠΑ Forepart of bridled horse to right, his head slightly lowered; all within shallow circular incuse. BCD (Nomos) 1337 (same dies). Rogers 541. SNG Copenhagen 255. Very rare. Attractive green patina. Very fine.
THESSALY, Trikka. Circa 440-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.92 g 11). Horse galloping to left. Rev. Τ-Ι-Ρ (Sic!) The nymph Trikke bending to the right, her left leg raised, holding a hydria, which she fills with water pouring from a lion’s head spout at the upper right; behind her to left, a low bench; all within an incuse square. BCD (Triton) 778.4, 779.3 var. Very rare, possibly unpublished. Slightly rough surfaces, but very sharp and well-struck. Nearly extremely fine.

ΘΕΣΣΑ / ΛΩΝ Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear with her right hand and extending shield in her left; in field to left and right, Π-Ο / Λ-Ι. BCD Thessaly 1370 (this coin). BMC 4. SNG Berry 554. A bright and attractive example. Traces of overstriking on the obverse. About extremely fine.

AKARNANIA, Leukas. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 8.50 g 12). Pegasos leaping right; below, Λ. Rev. Head of a goddess to right (Athena or possibly Aphrodite), wearing Corinthian helmet with back flap; behind neck, Λ and ladle with a long handle (kyathos). BMC Corinth p. 131, 71. BCD 223 var. Calciati 109/2. A lovely toned example of splendid style. Nearly extremely fine.
AKARNANIA, Leukas. Circa 350-300 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 4.29 g 9). Bellerophon riding Pegasos to right, wearing petasos and hurling spear held in his upraised right hand; below, round shield. Rev. ΘΕ The infant Herakles, nude, seated facing and holding a coiling serpent by the neck in each hand; above, club to left. Unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. Unique, an exceptional coin of great importance. Minor scrapes on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

LOKRIS, Lokris Opuntii. Earlier 350s BC. Stater (Silver, 12.01 g 5). Head of Persephone to left, wearing wreath of grain leaves and triple-pendant earring. Rev. ΟΠΟΝ - ΤΙΩΝ Ajax, nude but for helmet, moving right, holding short sword in his right hand and, in his left, shield adorned with a serpent on the inside; below, on ground, crested helmet to left over two spears with points to left and right. BCD Lokris 43 (same dies). BMC 18. McClean 5428. Lustrous and attractive with beautifully detailed types. Some striking flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.

Some very minor roughness, otherwiwse, Extremely fine.

Good very fine.

ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Cf. Dewing 1592 and Svoronos pl. 12, 17 . A superb example, with the full helmet crest on the obverse, very rare thus, and with a lovely small head of Athena. Some very minor traces of horn silver, otherwise, good extremely fine.

ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Cf. Dewing 1594 and Svoronos pl. 14, 3 . A splendid coin with a wonderful archaizing head of Athena. Minor flan fault in the reverse field and some minor marks, otherwise, virtually as struck.

Milbank pl. 2, 12-13. An exceptionally well-preserved piece struck in very high relief. Minor bang at the top of the shell, otherwise, good extremely fine.
