KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander I. 498-454 BC. Oktadrachm (Silver, 30mm, 28.63 g), c. 492-480/79 BC. Horseman, wearing petasos and holding two transverse spears, walking on the far side of a horse that he is leading slowly to the right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. The early coinage of the kingdom of Macedonia differed little from the miscellaneous tribal coinage with which it was contemporary (such as that of the Bisaltai). Prior to the defeat of the Persians in 480, Alexander I avoided putting his name and title on the coinage, but after their retreat his power increased so much that his later issues bore his name. This early piece is particularly well struck and preserved with every detail clear (since these heavy coins were primarily produced as bullion for trade with the Levant and Egypt, they are usually found worn and battered). It is a most impressive coin.
