DYNASTS of LYCIA. Artumpara. Circa 400-370 BC. Stater (Silver, 7.62 g 9), Telmessos. (uncertain inscription) Bearded head of the Satrap to right, wearing Persian tiara Rev. ΑΡΤΟΧΠΑΡΑ Helmeted head of Athena to right.. Cf BMC 111. SNG Copenhagen, including Supplement, -. Traité -. Extremely rare. One of only a very few coins of this Dynast known. Good fine.

From the PGB collection, acquired in the early 1970s.

Artumpara was a late satrap or dynast of Lycia who was involved in putting down the revolt of Datames; he himself seems to have been defeated by Perikle, who at one point seems to have ruled over most of Lycia. The appearance of the satrap’s head on the obverse is quite unexpected so early - this may have been a sign of a growing independence that did not go over well with his Persian overlords.
