Nero, 54-68. Aureus (Gold, 19 mm, 7.43 g, 9 h), Rome, 64-65. NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Nero to right. Rev. CONCORDIA AVGVSTA Concordia seated to left, holding patera in right hand and cornucopia in left. BMC 61. BN 207. Calicó 405. CNR 25/1 (this coin). Cohen 66. RIC 48. Attractively toned red around the devices, as is typical of coins from Boscoreale. Light graffito on obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection and from the collection of Jean Faure (1862-1942), Bourgey, 10 December 1923, 94, ex Duprier, 20 April 1914, 144, and from the Boscoreale hoard of 1895.

Boscoreale was, in ancient times, a wealthy suburb of Pompei, and was the location of a remarkable find of ancient silver vessels and gold coins that was found in the remains of a Roman villa, the Villa della Pisanella, in the room used for grape pressing. The vessels were bought en bloc by Baron Edmond de Rothschild who donated them to the Louvre in 1896. The coins, roughly 1000 in number, were dispersed hither and yon.
