PHOENICIA. Byblos. 'Urimilk II – Yehawmilk, Circa 460/459-450 BC. Shekel (Silver, 19.5 mm, 6.66 g, 12 h), Phoenician standard. Sphinx seated to left, wearing the Egyptian Pschent crown. Rev. Double lotus - the lightning bolt of Baal Hadad - within a dotted circle inside an incuse square. Apparently unpublished, but cf. Betlyon 1 (struck on a different weight standard). For two other examples, struck from the same dies but of heavier weight, see CNG 109, 2023, 498 and CNG e529, 2022, 304. Very rare and of great importance. Lightly toned. About extremely fine.

An important transitional issue: while the same type as Betlyon’s Byblos 1, which was struck on a heavier c. 8 g standard, this coin was at the lighter weight of 6.6 g. While it could be that this coin was actually meant to be a 3/4 shekel, that does seem rather farfetched since it was struck from the same dies that were used for full weight pieces. Thus, it must be that this coin was struck at a time of changing standards.
