IONIA. Erythrai. Circa 550-500 BC. Hemistater (Electrum, 14 mm, 6.99 g). A high relieft, raised circular floral device with twelve outer petals around a center of four double-petals. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA add. 166 = Jameson 2293 (same dies). The second and better example known! A pleasantly symmetrical and high relief design, beautifully preserved. Good extremely fine.

In its simplicity and elegance, this coin stands out from all the other early electrum coins of Ionia; it was struck from an obverse die prepared by a true master engraver. Its perfectly symmetrical floral design is breathtaking, especially since it is so well-struck from a fresh die and is so well-centered. It is not an exaggeration to consider this coin as being one of the most impressive of all the coinage minted by Erythrai.
