IONIA. Ephesos. Circa 390-380 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.84 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrate Arialthes. E-Φ Bee with straight wings seen from above. Rev. APIAΛΘHΣ Forepart of a stag kneeling to right, his head turned back to left; behind, date palm tree. BMFA 1823. Hecatomnus 24. Karwiese II, 196 (this coin). Clear, well-centered and with a patina as found. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From the "Alexander the Great" collection, Kunker 376, 18 October 2022, 4698, ex Hirsch 159, 21 September 1988, 327, and Giessener Munzhandlung 13, 28 June 1979, 130.

What is intriguing about this coin is the magistrate's name: Arialthes. This is certainly not a Greek name; thus it must indicate that this magistrate was probably a Persian official who served in Ephesos.
