MYSIA. Kyzikos. Circa 500-450 BC. Stater (Electrum, 18 mm, 16.13 g). Winged ithyphallic mythological creature with a man's body, a short, animal tail, a horse's mane, a tall, griffin's ear, and the head of a lion-boar, in the running-kneeling posture to left, his head to right, holding a tunny by the tail with his right hand, and resting his left at his waist. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA 1457. Greenwell 57. Gulbenkian 617. SNG Paris 271. SNG von Aulock 1198. Von Fritze I, 123. Warren 1471. Well-struck and attractive. By far the best example known. Extremely fine.

Von Fritze suggested the figure on the obverse is Phobos, the son of Ares and Aphrodite who was the god of fear and panic. He supposedly had a lion-like head.
