MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 380-350 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 14.20 g, 5 h), struck under the magistrate Alexios. ΑΛΕΞΙOΣ Lion to right, attacking bull collapsing to left. Rev. ΑΚΑ-Ν-ΘΙΟ-Ν in a shallow incuse square around a quadripartite square with stippled quarters in relief. Desneux -. HGC 3.1, 391. Telekas, Group 58, 392 var. (O331/-, unrecorded reverse die). Perfect centering and boldly struck. Some die rust on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

The lion and bull tetradrachms of Akanthos were issued in very large numbers as a convenient way of exporting the area's abundant silver. As a result they are found over a wide area in the East, ranging from Egypt to the borders of India (their type was an ancient eastern symbol as well). Since the publication of Desneux's die-study in 1949, "Les tétradrachmes d'Akanthos" in Revue belge de numismatique 95, a large number of new dies have appeared (as, for example, that used for the reverse of this coin), as well as a few new magistrates.
