Justinian I, 527-565. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.56 g, 12 h), Rome, I = 10th officina, 542-546. D N IVSTINI-ANVS PP AVC Cuirassed bust of Justinian I facing, wearing a helmet with a trefoil ornament, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand, and with a shield, decorated with a horseman, over his left shoulder. Rev. VICTORI-A AVCCC I / CONOB Angel standing facing, holding a long staff surmounted by a staurogram with his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left; in the field to right, star of eight rays. DOC 320f. MIBE 34. SB 291. For another solidus from the same dies, see H.J. Berk FPL 9, February 2019, 167. A very rare type, with a dramatic obverse, sharply struck from fresh dies. Obverse very slightly double struck, minor marks, otherwise, virtually as struck.

From the Bollen Collection of Byzantine Coins.

This coin provides us with an obverse 'portrait' of an unusually dramatic style, quite different from the portrait types found in Constantinople. In fact, it almost seems to have a slight degree of individuality.
