CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 450-438/7 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.32 g, 6 h). Lion's mask facing . Rev. Π-Α Quadripartite windmill pattern incuse square, with alternating inscribed and stellate quarters. An apparently unpublished variant. Cf. Anokhin 31 (but with a lion's head facing). Extremely rare. Clear and well-struck. Slightly rough surfaces as found. Good very fine.

This is a very interesting variant on the usual iconography of the early coinage of Pantikapaion. The usual obverse shows a facing lion's head, but what we have here is clearly a lion's mask, like that on MacDonald 44.
