CALABRIA. Tarentum. Punic occupation, circa 212-209 BC. 1/2 Shekel (Silver, 19 mm, 3.51 g, 11 h), struck under the magistrtes Ek..., Zo..., and Kritos. KPITO-Σ Nude youth riding a horse prancing to right, crowning the horse with a wreath held with his right hand and holding the reins and a palm branch in his left. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Taras astride dolphin swimming to left, holding, in his extended right hand, Nike flying to right to crown him, and, with his left, a trident; in the field to left, monogram of EK; in the field to right, monogram of ΖΩ. HGC 1, 932. HN III 1080. SNG Paris 2067. Vlasto 980. Rare; well centered and clear. Nearly extremely fine.

During the Second Punic War, in 212 Tarentum switched sides and joined forces with Hannibal. The Punic army took control of the city but could not get access to the citadel, which remained in the hands of Roman troops and their allies. The strategic value of Tarentum for Hannibal was much diminished by his inability to take the enemy stronghold within the city.
