Michael II the Amorian, 820-829. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.40 g, 6 h), Constantinople, 820-821/2. ∗ MIX-AHL bASILЄς Crowned bust of Michael II facing, wearing chlamys and holding a cross potent with his right hand and an akakia in his left. Rev. MIXAH-L bASILЄЧς Є Crowned bust of Michael II facing, wearing loros and holding a globus cruciger in his right hand and a cruciform scepter with his left. DOC 1. Füeg 1.a. SB 1639. Very rare (only 9 examples known: 4 are in museums and 5, including this one, in private collections), toned and well-centered. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Having two 'portraits' of the same emperor, one on the obverse and one on the reverse, must symbolize the civil and military roles that were united in the ruler's person
