Beautifully toned and, despite a small amount of roughness in Helios' hair, a truly remarkable example. Extremely fine.
From the collection "Sans Pareille", acquired in the 1970s, from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and John Ward, Sotheby & Co.4 April 1973, 604 and from that of H. Montagu, II, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 15 March 1897, 284 (part).
No examples of the type are to be found in any of the standard references for the coinage of Rhodes other than Ashton's The Coinage of Rhodes 408-c. 190 BC (in Money and its Uses in the Ancient Greek World, Oxford, 2001), he was never-the-less able to document no fewer than 18 specimens of the type.
