CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.35 g, 9 h), struck under the magistrate Xenokrates. Armoured military leader, riding a horse moving slowly to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus; below horse, ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ. Rev. [Τ]ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and, barely visible to right, a cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 955-958. A lovely, sharp example. Good extremely fine.

From the Morcote Collection, formed before 2005.

In the next lot we will see this general present with a wreath of victory by Nike; now we see him, the wreath now on his head, saluting the crowds during his triumph!!
