PHRYGIA. Gordium. 2nd-1st century BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.68 g, 12 h). Jugate, draped busts of Artemis and Apollo to right, both laureate; over Artemis's shoulder, quiver. Rev. ΓOΡΔI - ANΩN Bow and quiver. H. P. Borrell, "Unedited Greek Coins", NC 1845-1846, p. 27 = Paris AA.GR.10254. A great rarity, perhaps only the third example known. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a European Collection.

Gordium was the ancient capital of the Phrygians, whose most famous king was the legendary Midas. The kingdom later was under Lydian rule, and then, with the defeat of Kroisos, it became Persian; it was subsequently ruled by the Attalids, and finally, by the Romans. This piece is one of the very few autonomous coins it produced.
