KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.18 g, 5 h), Amphipolis, circa 316/5-295/4. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟ-Υ Naked jockey riding to right; below, Λ above torch and YE monogram. Dembski 975-976 var. Le Rider pl. 47, 21. SNG ANS 788-93. With a curious legend break. About very fine.

From the collection of W.F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Münzen & Medaillen AG, Basel, ex Gerhard Hirsch 9, 26 June 1956.

This coin is a perfect example of the prototype on which the vast majority of all the later imitations of Philip II's tetradrachms were based.
