TROAS. Gargara. 4th century BC. (Bronze, 9 mm, 0.68 g, 8 h). Youthful male head (Hermes?) to left with wing(?) at temple. Rev. Head of a ram to right. SNG Arikantürk -. Cf. Künker 133, 2007, 7509 (ram's head to left). Cf. SNG von Aulock 7597 (laureate Apollo on obverse, different position of legend). An extremely rare and apparently unpublished variant. Black patina. Very fine.

While the male head on the fourth-century small bronzes of Gargara are usually bare or laureate, here it sports an unusual feature at the temple suggestive of a wing. Thus it may be that the head on this particular issue was intended to represent Hermes. The apparent wing may also prefigure the wing that later adorned portraits of the Seleucid king Antiochus Hierax at mints in Troas and which is thought to have had regional cultic associations.
