SICILY, Morgantina. The Hispani, 2nd century BC. Unit (Bronze, 20mm, 6.51 g 12). [HISPANORVM] Youthful male head to right. Rev. [HISPANORVM] Horseman to right, holding spear. CNS III, 341. SNG ANS 484. Die break on obverse, otherwise, about very fine.


From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

The Hispani were Iberian mercenaries brought to Sicily by the Romans during the 2nd Punic War. They were apparently settled in Morgantina after the end of the war where they issued their own coinage with Latin legends.
