KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Circa 500-480 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 11.5 mm, 1.89 g, 11 h). Gorgoneion facing; above, silphium fruit, point upward. Rev. Octopus with four legs spread to left and right; pellet on the left field. Cf. BMC 21a, pl. IV, 12 (Paris, facing lion's head with silphium fruit above). SNG Copenhagen - . Apparently unpublished and possibly unique. Toned. Obverse struck slightly off center and with a flan fault, otherwise, very fine.

Although the gorgoneion appears as a reverse type on early tetradrachms of Kyrene (BMC 18) this coin represents its first known use as an obverse type at the city.
