KINGS OF MACEDON. Antigonos II Gonatas, 277/6-239 BC. (Bronze, 16.5 mm, 4.28 g, 12 h), Pella, c. 274/3-239. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress; c/m: owl (?) standing right, head facing, within circular incuse. Rev. B-A / (ANT) Horseman riding right; before, A or monogram (indistinct). HGC 3, 1046. Attractive green patina. Very fine.

After the defeat of Philip V and the annexation of the Macedonian Kingdom as a Roman Province, the Thessalians countermarked bronze coins of the former Macedonian kings to re-tariff them for continued use within their realm. This coin of Antigonos II appears to have a countermark with an owl, the legs and lower part of the body clear.
