Lot 234

PAMPHYLIA, Aspendos. Circa 420-360 BC. Obol (Silver, 11mm, 1.08 g 11). Gorgoneion with protruding tongue. Rev. Ε [Σ] Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with olive leaves and tendril; all within incuse square. SNG Paris 31. SNG von Aulock 5242 (identified as Selge in error). A piece of unusually fine style, toned but with slightly rough surfaces. Nearly extremely fine.

From the RRG collection, acquired prior to 1978.

On the obverse is a powerful Gorgon’s head, quite unlike the usual insipid types found at Aspendos; the head of Athena on the reverse is also very elegantly depicted.
