Lot 54

SICILY, Naxos. c. 420-403 BC. Litra (Silver, 11mm, 0.56 g 1). Head of bearded Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. Bunch of grapes on vine branch with leaves. Cahn 144. SNG ANS 530. SNG Copenhagen 490. An attractive, toned example, but on a porous flan. Considerable weight loss due to corrosion, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of a European specialist.

This coin is very attractive, but it is of surprisingly light weight. This can only be explained by its having lost weight during its centuries of burial.
