IONIA. Teos. Circa 440-420 BC. Stater (Silver, 11.99 g). Griffin with left foreleg raised, seated to right on ground line over an egg and dart frieze; to right, duck seated to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Balcer 101. BMFA 1939. A lovely coin struck in high relief. Some very slight porosity, otherwise. Extremely fine.

From the Outstanding Collection, Leu 81, 16 May 2001, 280 and ex Sternberg XVIII, 20 November 1986, 157.

The people of Teos founded the Thracian city of Abdera, which also used a griffin as its coin type; those of Teos face right while the Abderitan monsters are turned to the left.
