CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 280-272 BC. Stater (Silver, 7.92 g 9), magistrates Nikodamos, Eu... and Aga... . Rider, nude but for helmet and shield over his left arm, on horse walking to left; to left, ΕΥ (retrograde); below horse, ΝΙΚΟ / ΔΑΜ / ΟΣ Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, depicted as a nude child with a tuft of hair on his forehead, riding dolphin to left and holding a bunch of grapes in his right hand and a distaff in his left; to right, rooster standing left; below, ΑΓΑ. Evans VI G. HN III 970. Vlasto 707 (this coin). Very attractively toned. Extremely fine.

From the “Outstanding Collection”, Leu Numismatics 81,16 May 2001, 13 and from the collections of M. P. Vlasto and J. J.Charvet, Rollin & Feuardent, 30 April 1903.

The rider on the obverse of this coin seems to be parading, perhaps after the successful conclusion of his race, since his nudity suggests that despite his two pieces of armor he was not acting militarily.
