VIRTVS VENETA Winged putto standing front on a base, and holding ovals containing portraits of the doge M. Giustinian and the successful general F. Morosini; on the base, view of Napoli di Romania (Nafplion); to left and right, trophies of Turkish arms; below, two putti bearing shields with views of the fortresses and cites of Scim, Prevesa, Igoumenitza and Argos; below, initials LGL; on the edge, HOC DUCTU ADRIACUS VENETAM MIRAMUR IN UNDISSTARE VRBEM ET TOTO PONERE IURA MARE.
Rev. Victory, winged and wearing a mural crown, seated left, holding a shield inscribed, DE / TUR /CIS/1686 / GH, and surrounded by winged putti holding views of the captured cities of Navarino, S.Maura, Coron, Calamata, Modon and Chielafa (a fortress in the Mani). Voltolina 1049. Extremely rare in silver. A splendid medal, beautifully toned. Extremely fine.
This medal commemorates the almost unending stream of victories that occurred during the first phase of Venice’s conquest of the Morea in the 1680s.
