Southern Netherlands. William I, Prince of Orange. 1544-1585. Medal (Silver, gilt, 43mm, 31.4 g 1), a contemporary cast, by Conrad Bloc, Antwerp, 1577. GVILEL.D.G.PR.AVRAICAE.CO.NASSAVIAE.1577 Bare headed, draped and cuirassed bust of William to right; below, .COEN.BLOC.F. Rev. SAEVIS TRANQVILLVS IN VNDIS ( = tranquil in the midst of the savage waves) Kingfisher flying right to its nest, floating on the rough sea; to left, mountain; above, CHRS in rays with five cherubim flying in clouds to right, above the mountain. Tourneur, RBN 1925, p. 204. Van Loon I, pp. 236/7. Very rare. An attractive original cast, with some chasing and with the fields lightly smoothed to receive the original gilding. Some minor marks and rubbing, otherwise, about extremely fine.
