KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Circa 453-331 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.5 mm, 13.05 g, 1 h). Head of Zeus Ammon to left, with ram's horn over his ear. Rev. Silphium plant with four leaves (two on each side), and five umbels (one at the top and one above each pair of leaves); at the base of the plant, uncertain items (an animal or bird?, another plant?). BMC 75, pl. IX, 6 (same dies). BMFA -. SNG Copenhagen -. Very rare. With an intriguing head of Zeus Ammon, whose hair seems to be made from spaghetti! Could this be a premonition of the Italian conquest of 1911?. Small scratch and a metal flaw on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the Battos Collection.
