KINGS OF BITHYNIA. Prusias I Chloros, circa 230-182 BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 28 mm, 11.60 g, 1 h). Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΠΡΟΥΣΙΟΥ Helmeted and winged figure of Athena-Nike standing to left, crowning the king's name with her right hand and resting her left on a shield by her side, decorated with a gorgoneion; in the field to left, monogram of TPAΓ. RG 16. Cf. SNG Copenhagen 625-627 var. and SNG von Aulock 6880 var. (but both with a differing monogram). Well struck, and with a lovely dark black-green patina overlaid with earthen highlights; an exceptionally nice example, free from the usual countermarks that this type so often seems to have. Extremely fine.

From a German collection, acquired prior to 2000.

The laureate head of Apollo on this coin is apparently no different from many others that appeared on other issues, both earlier and contemporary to this one. However, on this coin Apollo has a large and flashily mature face, with surprisingly individual features. Could it be a idealised portrait? And if so, of whom?
