Unique Sinope drachm

Estimate: 1000 CHF
Hammer Price:  2200 CHF
Lot 118

PAPHLAGONIA. Sinope. Circa 425-410 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 5.92 g), Aeginetic standard. Head of a sea eagle to right; below, dolphin swimming to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square composed of two raised and two sunken squares; within one of the sunken squares, an uncertain letter on one side of a raised line with a pellet on the other; in the opposing square, a pellet on the side of a raised line forming the back of a B . Seemingly unpublished. HGC 7, 387 var. (differing reverse). SNG BM Black Sea -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. For a vaguely similar piece, albeit with a stylistically different eagle head and an equally different reverse, see CNG 76, 2007, 668 and the very much inferior CNG 461, 2020, 91. Apparently unique. With a powerful eagle's head, though somewhat rustically done. Minor marks and deposits. Good very fine.

It is quite possible that this piece, and the two in CNG, may actually be imitations of Sinope, given how much they differ stylistically from the normal Sinopean issues. In any case these right-wing birds are very rare, indeed .
