ARGOLIS. Argos. Circa 490-470 BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.82 g, 12 h). Head of a wolf to left with open jaws and a pearled truncation; on the wolf's neck, Σ (retrograde). Rev. Α with a pellet below the cross bar, within a shallow incuse square containing, in the upper part, two relatively shallow incuse rectangles. H. B. Andersen, Masters of Miniature Art, A window to the birth of western culture and art, p. 56 (this coin). BCD Peloponnesos - (but cf. 1017 for a triobol from the same series, struck from dies engraved by the same engraver, and also with the retrograde Σ on the wolf's neck). Extremely rare, and apparently unpublished for this denomination. Nicely centered and well-struck. Extremely fine.
