KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.40 g, 9 h), struck under Kassander, or slightly later, Amphipolis, 315/4-295/4. Laureate head of Zeus to right; border of dots. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠ-ΟΥ Young jockey, holding a palm branch with his right hand and the in his left reins, riding a horse prancing to right; below the horse's belly, Λ over torch; below his raised right foreleg, dolphin swimming to right. Le Rider pl. 48, 1. SNG ANS 808. SNG Copenhagen 560. Sharply struck, beautifully centered, toned and with an imposing head of Zeus. Minor marks on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

This is one of the latest Philip-type tetradrachms issued by Kassander, and was a clear inspiration for the imitative issues that were produced in nearby areas of the Balkans. The obverse is particularly dramatic in conception; it is also very close in feeling to the contemporary copies.
