KINGS OF MACEDON. Amyntas III, 393-370/69 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 10.35 g, 12 h). Royal huntsman, wearing petasos and hunting attire, holding a short javelin in his upraised right hand and the reins of a prancing horse, which he rides to right; on the horse's hindquarters, kerykeion brand mark. Rev. Lion crouching to left on a ground line, breaking a spear held in his mouth; all within a linear square. AMNG III/2, 6 and pl. XXX, 6. SNG ANS 99. SNG Ashmolean 2440 = ACGC 506. Westermark, Remarks, pl. LXX, 31. Traité II, 4, 847 and pl. CCCV, 13. Rare, especially when struck in good silver as this seems to be. Very nicely centered and very attractively toned. Extremely fine.
