THRACE. Abdera. Circa 411/0-386/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 12.62 g, 12 h), Herogeiton magistrate, ca. 390 BC. ΑΒΗΡΙ Griffin standing on a base, rearing up to left. Rev. Ε𐅃 - Η-ΡΟΓΕΙ - ΤΟΝΟΣ Statue of Hera, seated on a low-backed throne, her legs half turned to her left and with her feet on a foot stool, and her body turned to front, wearing a polos and a veil, a long chiton and a himation, and raising both hands with her palms facing front. Lorber, Amphipolis, p. 177, Herogeiton, a (this coin). May, Abdera 351 (A254/P297, same dies). Münzen und Medaillen 77, 1992, 37 (same dies). Very rare. With a splendid griffin in high relief, and a remarkable representation of Hera. Sharply struck and attractively toned. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

The representation of Hera - and it is certainly Hera - is a remarkable one. Is she raising her hands in surprise or is she raising them to protect the viewer?
