LUCANIA. Thourioi. Circa 325-300 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 7.85 g, 9 h), struck under the magistrate Euphr.... Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned, on the bowl, with Skylla hurling a stone to right and, on the neck guard, with a hippocamp, pendant earring and a pearl necklace. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ Bull butting to right, his head lowered and turned to his right; above, Nike flying to right, holding, with both hands, a wreath to crown the bull; below the bull's body and head, ΕΥ - ΦΡ; on the groundline, between the bull's hind legs, finch flapping its wings to right. Unpublished, but cf. HN III 1850 (for this denomination and magistrate); and see Triton XI, 2008, 23, NAC 52, 2009, 42, and NAC 64, 2012, 641 (all struck from the same dies). A very attractive, toned example, sharply struck from fresh dies. Extremely fine.
