SATRAPS OF CARIA. Pixodaros, circa 341/0-336/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 15.32 g, 12 h), Halikarnassos. Laureate head of Apollo facing, turned slightly to the right, and with the ends of his cloak bound by a broach beneath his chin. Rev. ΠΙΞΩΔΑΡΟΥ Zeus Labraundos standing to right, fully draped and holding a long scepter with his left hand and a double-axe with his right; below to right, between Zeus's left ankle and the butt of the sceptre, Ε. Konuk 3i = Pixodarus 9i (this coin). SNG von Aulock 8047 (same obverse die). Rare. An attractive coin, struck in high relief, nicely toned and with a fine and emotional 'portrait' of Apollo. Very minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

Property of a Late Collector, ex Bank Leu 45, 26 May 1988, 234.

In 1988, this splendid example appeared in the Bank Leu sale with an estimate of CHF 16000 - it seems to have sold for 12500. In 1993, however, this fine coin was sold by Tradart for approximately €40000, which was then approximately CHF 58000 (sic!). Makes one think.
