Lot 1119

MACEDON. Mende. Circa 430 BC. Tritetartemorion (Silver, 9 mm, 0.63 g, 3 h), struck c. 425-423. Donkey standing to right; above, kerykeion to right; below, NI. Rev. ME-NΔ-A Bird standing to right; all within incuse square. Kagan, Notes, pl. 3, 16 (this coin). Cf. HGC 3, I, 563. (anepigraphic). Diez Collection, Lanz 151, 2011, 26 (same dies, but badly worn). Cf. SNG ANS 354 (anepigraphic and without kerykeion). Very rare and with an extremely clear reverse. Slightly porous and with some uncleaned deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan.

Concerning the bird that appears on the reverse of this coin, and on the backs of donkeys and in bushes on tetradrachms and tetrobols, it seems not to be a crow as it is usually described. Kagan, op. cit. pp. 23-26, points out that while crows have nothing to do with Dionysos, their relatives the European Jay (Garrulus glandarius and the Magpie (Pica pica) definitely do.
