Estimate: 5000 CHF
Hammer Price:  8500 CHF
Lot 465

DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Uncertain dynast, circa 490/80-440/30 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 9.38 g, 8 h). Boar standing to right. Rev. Tortoise seen from above in a dotted square frame within an incuse square. BMC 17. Falghera 48. Müseler II 30-1. SNG Copenhagen Supp. 385-6. SNG von Aulock 4072 (this coin). Well struck and lightly toned. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.

From an American collection and that of G. de Vestel, Lansky 31 October 2022, 113, Sternberg & Apparuti XIV, 24 May 1984 138 (acquired by Tradart), from the collection of H. S. von Aulock (1906-1980) and from the duplicates of the British Museum, Naville V, 18 June 1923, 2693.

This fascinating coin has been overstruck on an earlier issue featuring a triskeles within an incuse square as the reverse type. The central hole of the triskeles is still visible on the turtles back as are traces of the arms and the incuse square of the host coin.
