SICILY. Gela. Circa 465-450 BC. Litra (Silver, 12 mm, 0.76 g, 9 h). Horse walking to right, reins hanging down from his mouth to right;; above, wreath. Rev. CΕΛΑ Forepart of Acheloos as a man-headed bull to right. HGC 2, 373. Jenkins 263. SNG ANS 59. Nicely toned. Good very fine.

From the collection of Major Anthony F. Milavic, USMC (Ret.), ex Münzen und Medaillen 79, 28 February 1994, 106.

The horse on the obverse is walking along, cooling off from a race - perhaps we should visualise him as being lead on that curved rein by a groom - that he has won, as symbolised by the wreath above his back.
