Magas was son of Berenike I of Egypt, through her first marriage in 325 BC to a certain Philip, who was one of Alexander's officers. After Philip's death in c. 318, Berenike travelled to Egypt where she caught Ptolemy I's eye and married him in 317. When Magas was around 20 in c. 304/303 Ptolemy made him governor of Kyrene in succession to the previous governor, Ophellas, a veteran of Alexander's army, who had died in 308.
