KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Circa 500-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22.5 mm, 17.09 g, 9 h). The nymph Kyrene, wearing a chiton and a flat stephane, seated left on a diphros, its seat covered by a cloth, her right hand outstretched towards a silphium plant on the left and clutching a silphium fruit, and with her left held out just above her lap; behind her to right, silphium fruit with its point upwards. Rev. Head of Zeus-Ammon to right, bearded, with ram’s horn around his ear; all within a shallow incuse square. Cf. BMC 12a = Jameson 1346 = Traité II, 3, 1803 and pl. CCLXIII, 2. BMC 12b = Traité II, 1, 2017 and pl. LXIV, 17 (same reverse die. CNG e290, 2012, 226 (same obverse die). Extremely rare. Struck from dies of very fine early Classical style, nicely toned. With an ancient test cut on the reverse and some flat striking, otherwise, good very fine.
