CYPRUS. Lapethos. Uncertain king, late 6th-early 5th century BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 10.82 g, 5 h). Giant in the running/kneeling position to left, staunching a wound in his stomach with both hands. Rev. Herakles, wearing lion's skin with a curled tail, in the running/kneeling position to right, brandishing a club held in his upraised right hand and holding a bow and two arrows with his left; all within a dotted frame and a shallow incuse square. Destrooper-Georgiades, pl. XXVIII, 12-13. Kagan, Archaic pl. 7, D (same obverse die). Robinson, Notes on the Larnaca Hoard, NC 1935, pl. 15, 6-7 (same obverse die). ; Rosen 748. Schmidt, Persepolis II (1957), 39 (same obverse die). Extremely rare, seemingly the fifth known example: three are in museums, and iconographically exciting. Somewhat porous and with two test cuts, otherwise, fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, ex Classical Numismatic Group MBS 72, 14 June 2006, 851.
