Lot 1409

DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Uvug(?), circa 470-440 BC. Diobol (Silver, 11 mm, 1.30 g, 12 h). Forepart of winged bull flying right. Rev. Gorgoneion facing with protruding tongue; all within incuse square. Müseler IV, 13-14. SNG Berry 1167. SNG von Aulock 4101. Vismara II, 95. Nicely toned. Some roughness, otherwise, very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan.

Amusingly enough, the coin type has occasionally been attributed to Klazomenai by some urban professional numismatists. They have mistaken the animal's ear for a Λ and, not having any rural experience, have mistaken the very obvious bull on this coin, with its large horn, for a boar.
