ISLANDS OFF CARIA, Rhodos. Ialysos. Circa 480-408 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 1.24 g, 3 h). Forepart of winged boar flying to right, with wings above and below his body. Rev. Head of Athena to right, wearing crestless Corinthian helmet. BMC -. BMFA 1849. Naumann 91, 2020 (same reverse die). SNG Keckman 304. Very rare, toned, well-struck, well-centered and with an amusing late Archaic/early Classical head of Athena. nearly extremely fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan.

The presence of the boar's forepart has lead to a confusion between these coins from the city of Ialysos on island of Rhodes, and the similar issues from Klazomenai, which have the same boar but the head of a ram in lieu of Athena's.
