IONIA. Kolophon. Circa 450-410 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 5.46 g, 6 h), c. 440-430. [KOΛΦΩNION] Laureate head of Apollo to right, his hair in a roll at the back of his head; in the field to right, laurel leaf and berry on a twig. Rev. Kithara with seven strings; all within incuse square. Cf. Milne, Colophon, 22 (but with no leaf). An extremely rare variety, toned, well-struck and with a head of Apollo of particularly fine Classical style, reminiscent of those on the contemporary issues of Leontinoi. Very slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, about very fine.

From the Collections of Jonathan H. Kagan and R.P. Ball, Spink 382, 15 January 2023, 455 .

The 5th century drachms of Kolophon, with their sober and serene heads of Apollo struck from dies engraved by true artists, are, inexplicably underpriced on the market. Imagine what they would be worth if they had been struck in Sicily!!
